The paper presents the results of permafrost investigations carried out in 2009–2015 as part of the geocryological monitoring program on the territory of Yakutsk. Described are the structure and the thermal state of lake sediments cored from the cultural layer. The cryolithological and geochemical characteristics are used to define the thickness of these sediments and to assess their role in the development of the engineering and geological conditions in the urban area. It is concluded that urban ecosystems in the permafrost regions have distinctive geocryological characteristics due to the presence of sediments from the cultural layer.
